Abstract
Writing represents, with language, one of the most powerful instruments to understand reality and to control society. Writing is a mirror and a product of culture and thought as well. This project focuses on the various uses of writing for the compilation of different types of documents. In this perspective, the project also aims to deal with the trasmission of knowledge, the systems of governance and the administrative procedures in Anatolia during the 2nd and the 1st millennium BCE. Historians, archaeologists and philologists will closely collaborate in this project, which requires an interdisciplinary cooperation. Moreover, Anatolia is a privileged observatory because of the simultaneous use of two writings (the cuneiform and the hieroglyphic writing) during the 2nd millennium BCE, a situation which is not frequent in the ancient Near East. The loss of the cuneiform script and the survival of the Luvian-hieroglyphic writing during the Iron Age also represent aspects of particular interest.
