Chandra Talpade Mohanty is Distinguished Professor, now retired, of Women's and Gender Studies at Syracuse University. Claiming the "epistemological privilege" of the Global South, Black, migrant, poor and working-class women, over the course of her career as a scholar-activist Mohanty has articulated a critique of oppression and exploitation grounded both in the lived experience and struggles of marginalized subjects and in the possibility of practicing a transnational solidarity that is not identity-based, but rooted in a radical materialist analysis of power and injustice. The opening event, organized jointly by the Master's Programme in Global Cultures and the PhD Programme in Global Histories, Cultures and Politics, will be an occasion for an intergenerational dialogue around her foundational contribution to a feminist political theory rooted in the experience of postcolonial social movements, committed to a radical critique of society, and aspiring to build an insurgent feminist vision of social justice.
