The project started in 2017 and the archaeological digs campaign in the necropolis of Corinaldo, Nevola locality (licensed by MIBAC), since 2018.

Overview

The excavations in the Picenian and Roman necropolis in Corinaldo are part of the research carried out by ArcheoNevola, a multidisciplinary project which applies methodologies of territorial investigation and mapping, mainly non-invasive, for the diachronic analysis of the Nevola river Valley, in northern Marche. This is a landscape still scarcely known in its archaeology and history, especially for the settlement dynamics occurred during the Iron Age. Aerial and geophysical surveys led to the recent discovery in Corinaldo of a Picenian orientalising necropolis, consisting of large ring ditches, and the excavation of the greater circle brought to light a princely tomb belonging to a high-ranking Picenian leader.

The oldest tomb core is flanked by a Roman necropolis, the exploration of which is proving equally important for the reconstruction of the funerary landscape and its evolution over time, also in relation to ideological aspects and associated rituals.

The archaeological investigations are also connected to a modern land transformation project, according to the procedures of modern preventative archaeology.
